1-on-1 meetings between employees and managers are an important part of performance management and helping both managers and employees level up. Managers and their direct reports should meet on a minimum cadence of twice a month. 1-on-1s will be tracked in Lattice and the core agenda is as follows:

  • What’s going on work-wise? – This question is not to get a list of projects you are working on. Rather, it’s to get an understanding of what may be problem areas that you are experiencing in dealing with team members struggles you might be experiencing with the work itself.

  • Where did you struggle with exemplifying our values since we last met? – This question is meant to identify any losses you experienced since we last spoke. The goal is to get to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.

  • What roadblocks are you running into? – This question is to help explicitly identify what external issues may be causing you to not meet the expectations of our value set.

  • How did you exemplify our values since we last met? – This question is to identify any key wins that your manager may or may not be aware of in attempts to recognize your efforts and figure out how to continue the trend.

  • What’s the update on your OKRs? – This question is meant to get a progress report on where you stand with respect to delivering on the goals you have been tasked with.

  • How can I support you better? – This is a question so your manager can explicitly understand where they may be falling short in your support needs.

  • What are you unhappy with in your role or at the company? – This is a question to proactively identify any issues that can be solved in order to keep you happy and doing great work with us.

  • How’s life? – This is a question to get a better understanding of the things you care about outside of the work environment and just check in on your wins outside what we’re doing on the day to day.

During or immediately after the meeting the manager needs to update Lattice with details of the discussion.

Any remaining action items should be noted in the additional notes section and resulting information should be shared with the team member.
